How to write about your science without dumbing it down
Clarity is not the enemy of scientific accuracy. The right structure helps a wider audience follow the work without losing what matters.
“Make it simpler” is one of the most frustrating requests a scientist can hear. Too often, it sounds like an invitation to strip out the caveats, flatten the mechanism, or turn years of careful work into a slogan.
But clarity and accuracy are not opposites. Good science communication does not remove the substance. It changes the order in which the reader meets it.
Start with the reader’s question
Technical teams often begin with the subject: the platform, the pathway, the assay, the device. A non-specialist reader usually begins somewhere else: Why should I care? What changes if this works? Why is this approach different?
Answering that question first is not oversimplification. It is orientation. Once the reader knows where the explanation is going, they have a reason to stay with the detail.
A useful opening sequence is:
- The problem in the reader’s world.
- The consequence of leaving it unsolved.
- The idea behind your approach.
- The evidence that makes the approach credible.
This sequence earns attention before asking the reader to process complexity.
Separate precision from density
Dense writing can feel scientific because it contains many facts. That does not make it precise. Precision means choosing the exact information the reader needs to understand a claim—and using language that cannot easily be misread.
Long noun phrases, unexplained abbreviations, and sentences carrying four ideas at once increase density. They do not necessarily increase accuracy.
Try giving each sentence one job. Define an unfamiliar term at the moment it becomes useful. Keep the caveat close to the claim it qualifies. The science remains intact, while the reader gets a path through it.
The aim is not to make the science smaller. It is to make the route through it clearer.
Use layers, not one universal explanation
Your home page, investor deck, technical brief, and regulatory submission should not contain the same level of detail. They can still tell the same story.
Think in layers:
- Headline: the core value or change in plain language.
- Short explanation: the problem, approach, and reason to believe.
- Supporting detail: mechanisms, evidence, limitations, and context.
- Technical source: the material a specialist can inspect in full.
Layering lets readers choose the depth they need. It also prevents the top of the communication from carrying every qualification at once.
Keep the terms that matter
Not every technical term needs replacing. Some are the most accurate and efficient words available. Keep a term when it is central to the reader’s understanding, then explain it with a concrete phrase or example.
Remove jargon when it is functioning as shorthand for insiders rather than information for the audience. If a simpler phrase means the same thing, use it. If it changes the meaning, keep the scientific language and support it.
The test is straightforward: can a careful reader explain the main idea back to you—and would a subject expert still recognise the science? When both answers are yes, the communication is doing its job.
